Spanish Lit month 2017

Grant ask Richard and I if we were going to do another Spanish lit month and we said yes rather late the next two months will give everyone chance to take a few Spanish language translations off their TBR piles.

Here are my choice first a book I have read but isn’t due out yet This Mexican novel follows Lucina a young Mexican writer, like most of her fellow writers she has come to New York. But a genetic condition means her eyes haemorrhage return home her life takes a turn.

Next up is the three Spanish novels from Peter Owen as part of the world series Nona’s room is a collection of short stories, with a female perspective.Inventing love follows a man that receives a call when a lover has died, but he didn’t know the lover but decides to see where going to her home and funeral leads him. Wold moon follows four Republican rebels on the run during the civil war in the land they grew up in trying to stay alive.

Then I have these three books, Camilo Jose Cela, I have read before, the hive is his most famous books and is a snapshot of the end of the civil war told through three hundred voices. Rafael Dieste tales and inventions of Felix Muriel is a collection of quirky short stories about Felix growing up and those around him. Then it is amung strange victims by another talented Mexican writer Daniel Saldana Paris a novel set i the Mexican Capital. I have a few other books on my TBR pile to add to the five I have to read here.

I just finished a Spanish language novel yesterday, will have a review up soon and will send you the link. Should I post it here? I tried posting reply on Richard’s blog but I could not get it to recognize my WordPress address. Thanks!

I am currently reading the hive in Spanish. Loving it. It would be good to read the English version afterwards. I am currently doing a Masters in Translation with a view to translating Spanish language novels into English.

I jumped right in with a browse through Lorca’s poems.

Thanks for the work that goes into organizing the “Month.”

Great timing! I’ve just finished In the Land of the Giants by Gabi Martinez transl Daniel Hahn (https://anzlitlovers.com/2017/07/04/in-the-land-of-the-giants-by-gabi-martinez-translated-by-daniel-hahn/) and I have some more on the TBR so I’ll read at least one other once Indigenous Lit Week is finished.
(BTW I’ve put the link here because (hi Joe at Rough Ghosts!) I can’t comment on Blogger blogs either).

Hoping to join in at some point as I have several on the shelves I’ve been meaning to get to, including a couple from Small Stations Press, an early Marías from the library, Carolina Sanín’s ‘The Children’, Cristina Sánchez-Andrade’s ‘The Winterlings’ and some bilingual short stories. Not to mention several neglected books on my Kindle…

Might not get to all that, though 😉

I read Wolf Moon and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was lucky to meet Julio Llamazres at a talk he gave. He seemed tickled when I told him that it was the first novel I had read in Spanish. The current bestseller here is Patria by Fernando Aramburu. I hope it gets translated as it’s a wonderful but harrowing read about life in the Basque Country after the ceasefire. Funnily enough, I’ve just published a post on Vulpes Libris about reading in Spanish…

Not sure where to add this, but here’s my first one, with another to come in due course (I hope). I read The Selected Stories of Mercè Rodoreda, translated by Martha Tennent and my review is here: https://anzlitlovers.com/2017/07/16/the-selected-stories-of-merce-rodoreda-translated-by-martha-tennent/

Hi just found this great weblog to motivate me to tell someone I’m going for “Cien Años de Soledad” for the second time round.
I read it at Uni for the first time , and didn’t grasp much, but, many years later, I’m giving it another go. Wish me luck 😊
    Regards.Marie.
