Still a month to go to this years German lit month but I have already two books read this year ready for November .I have a number of books I have taken down of the shelves of winstonsdad’s towers .I am always adding books with german lit month in mind when I find them .
The first pic Gregor Von Rezzoris snows of yesterday one I have want to read for a while , the tale of the writers life and his family .The a Gunter Grass one of two pictured , I also have a third book by him that I have to choose from .Then we have two classics of German lit The sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe he is considered the grandfather of german Literature I read Faust his most famous play years ago , I love this cover of the one world classic edition then also from one world classics is The devil’s elixirs by Hoffman a monk tries to… need I say more .
Then I have the Oxford collection of stories from Vienna including names like Roth, Schnitzler and Canetti .Then a collection of three novellas by Peter Handke Slow homecoming The same character Valentin Sorger is in all three books they focus on alienation through getting back into society then feeling inner harmony .Then the other Grass the huge Flounder is told over space of nine months as a father tells the story of his life and the fish the flounder , whilst his wife is expecting their child .
Then I looked back at the last four issues of New books in German the journal that deals with German translations and books available for translation to find a few books from Library to order , which have done also the new system on derbyshire libraries will let you search for translators and via this I have turned up a few gems from the 70’s that I can’t wait to read including one that left me shocked going really got read that (I think everyone will be same as me just hope it is there ) .I also managed to order a Frederich Schiller , Christa wolf and Remarque books that Lizzy and Caroline are doing during German lit Month , I sly said I may do a couple of books . I did 8 books in 2014 and 2013 ,9 in 2012 , 6 in 2011 so I hope to maybe get into double figures this year for German lit month .I always get excited for German lit month , rather sad I not been sent many new German books this last few months , but great books I have brought with german lit month in mind make up for that .

The Devil’s Elixirs is a favourite of mine as well; as is often the case with Hoffmann’s work, it’s great fun.
I haven’t really decided what to read yet. I often think of reading some Grass as I get the feeling he’s sliding into obscurity, and I’ve only read The Tin Drum.

Problem with Grass is some of his books of the time very much I feel his mid work books are a lot like this so haven’t aged so well which is a shame Heinrich Boil has same problem

I had a copy of Cat and Mouse hanging around for ages but never quite got round to read it. I love Böll’s The Clown; I was going to re-read it for last year’s GLM but ran out of time.

Aside from Hesse, I had never read much in the way of German literature until Karen introduced us to several at the 19th Century Literature group. I read both Werther and Devil’s Elixir there.
Nothing immediate on the horizon for me, although I’ve been planning a reread of Steppenwolf for quite a while.

There was some great german lit written then and even before that still inspires german writers I see there is a book recently a new telling of the werther story

I was reorganizing my shelves last night and I have more German lit than I expected though Sebald and Bernhard dominate. I have some really cool Bernhard on the way: The Voice Imitator, Victor Halfwit: A Winter’s Tale and due out next month a book called Walking. Expect some Bernhard. 🙂 I would like to read some Handke, so I may make that a personal goal.

Very interesting choices as ever, Stu. I love the covers of the Oneworld Classics editions, too, especially the Goethe.
I have a couple of books in mind for German Lit Month, possibly three depending on how my reading goes over the next few weeks. Looking forward to seeing the reviews. 🙂

My choice for German Lit Month is ‘Adam and Evelyn’ a novel by Ingo Schulze, a writer I have not read before.
I look at the recent awards lists for German literature and find that even the winners don’t get translated into English.

I seem to have very few German lit books in my shelves. One I just read which is Christa Wolf and the other is Remarque. I’ll have to make a trip to the library to see if they can offer anything

I found so much in this post to pique my interest! I, too, am preparing for German Literature Month. I am doing the Christa Wolf week, but I don’t know which book yet. I better get cracking!! I am also considering the Remarque novel. I haven’t read this one and probably wouldn’t if it weren’t being “hosted,” but I will finalize my plans in the next few weeks.
